- medium (cannot be scratched by a penny, but can be scratched by an iron nail)- feldspar (medium to hard), flourite, hematite, calcite, hornblende, magnetite, pyrite
- hard (cannot be scratched by a penny or a nail)- quartz
- magnetite- positive
- all others- negative
- crystal form (cleavage)- muscovite (layers), flourite, hornblende (cubes)
