Chapter 3: Linear Measures and Area
Your child will: explore the need for standard units of measure; measure lengths using customary and metric units; develop the concept of area; and investigate the relationship between diameter and circumference.

Students use their math skills to weigh and measure pumpkins.
Students use their measuring skills in real life situations.
After learning about perimeter and measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch. students took to the hallway to measure real rectangular objects. They decided to measure hallways, rugs, lockers, tables, and walls. A few used their knowledge of circumference to measure support poles as well.
Look for pictures soon of students working on their zoo projects!
Design Your Own Zoo Project
Today you have been hired as the head zookeeper for the new Woodland Meadows Zoo. It is your job to design and build plans for the new zoo. Below you will find a file listing the minimum space for necessary healthy and happy zoo animals. The areas listed are in square feet, and are just for ONE animal. If you want more than one animal, you will need to adjust the size of the enclosure accordingly (multiply).
Your zoo must have...
*At least 5 animals-show each enclosure on one-inch square grid paper. One square inch will equal 10 square feet. So, for a 30 square ft. enclosure, you would need 3 squares. For a 150 sq. ft. enclosure, you would need 15 squares.
*Paths and walkways for people to view the animals.
*A key on the zoo map stating that 1 square inch (and a cutout of 1 sq. inch) = 10 sq. feet.
*A title with the name Woodland Meadows Zoo with your name as head zookeeper
*Drawings or cutout pictures of the animals you've chosen, in their habitat.
Your zoo may have...
*More animals
*Other amenities for the customers such as bathrooms, restaurants, rides, benches, and learning centers as well.
Below you will find links to other zoo maps, in case you need inspiration. Have fun designing the new Woodland Meadows Zoo!
