Jan. 2013 Mini-Society Sale Day with First Grade Customers
Today our young entrepreneurs sold their products and services to our first grade neighbors. All throughout this week first graders have been earning our Mini-Society money in their classrooms. The classes of Mrs. Marl and Mrs. McKelvey shopped our classroom businesses for 15 min. each. Our businesses saw an increase in sales, and our students were very excited about their profits.

Pricing of Goods and Services
Today we talked about a market survey regarding product pricing. Students were asked to think about buying a paper airplane (a good). With their thumbs, they were asked to vote for how much they might pay for a paper airplane. See the results below. Many students will be surveying classmates tomorrow during school, as well as asking friends elsewhere what they might pay for their particular good or service. This way, students can get an idea how to initially price their good or service. (Note- most goods/ services typically cost between $1-5 dollars. Remember- your classmates only make $5 per day.)

Government
Students began this unit with a short study of our state government. So far, we've learned...
- The government provides goods and services, paid for with our taxes. Some may include: drinking water; the building of roads and bridges, hospitals, schools, and libraries; and providing public safety with firemen and policemen.
- The government provides these things for us because we can not do them on our own.
- People represent us in Lansing. These representatives are voted on by us, and work to make things better for us.
- You have to be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen to vote in an election.
Voting
Our classroom needed some of the same kinds of jobs filled as the state of Michigan. Students recently had the chance to fill some of our classroom jobs. First, they filled out an application. They had to state which job they were best suited for, and describe themselves. What qualities did they have that would make people want to vote for them? Were they honest, reliable, dependable, tidy, good at math, etc.? Students presented their qualifications to the class and were elected by popular sovereignty (majority rules).
