Structure and Function of Plants
Journey North Project: Planting Red Emperor Tulips
On October 27, our class planted 24 Red Emperor tulip bulbs as part of a science project. Following the 'tulip test bed' requirements from Journey North, an online project recording scientific information about wildlife migration and seasonal change, we planted our own test bed. We chose the area around the Peace Pole on the playground for two reasons: it fit the Journey North check list of requirements perfectly, and kids aren't supposed to play in that area of the playground. For the last two weeks, we've been learning about the correct planting times for tulips in our zone, scouting and researching our test bed site, and dissecting tulip bulbs. This is the day that we chose to plant, based on information and maps presented by Journey North.
Thank you to Griffin B. for being our official scientific photographer.

When we finished, we reported our bulb planting on the Journey North site, and checked out their maps and resources. After looking at the information, we made predictions about when our bulbs may emerge and bloom. Most of us thought the tulips would emerge sometime in early-mid April, and bloom in early May. Structures and Functions:
Organizations have different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.
The Learner Will...describe the function of plant parts: fower, stem, root, leaf
Classification:
Organizations can be classified on the basis of observable characteristics.

Environmental Adaptation:
Different kinds of organisms have characteristics that help them to live in different environments.
The Learner Will...relate characteristics and funcitnos of observable parts in a variety of plants that allow them to live in their environemnt (leaf shape, thorns, odor, color)
