Social Studies
Third grade students explore the social studies disciplines of history, geography,
civics and government, and economics through the context of Michigan studies.
Building on prior social studies knowledge and applying new concepts of each
social studies discipline to the increasingly complex social environment of their
state, the third grade content expectations help prepare students for more
sophisticated studies of their country and world in later grades.

Character Trait Study for Narrative Nonfiction
Students have been reading about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in class as part of our narrative nonfiction reading study. We have learned that narrative nonfiction is written like a story, with a character (with certain character traits) and a problem and solution. The students were interested in hearing a portion of Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Reaching Michigan was hard. Roads were very bad, if there were any all. None of the roads were paved- they were just dirt paths. There were so many trees here, they covered almost the whole state. Trees blocked sunlight from pioneer's crops so corn or wheat would not grow. Thousands and thousands of trees were cut down to farm.

During the week, all five 3rd-grade classrooms competed in a "good behavior" contest, earning 5 points (and a possible bonus point) each day for their behavior. Our students earned 6 points each day from Mon. -Thurs. After a great practice and performance on Friday, we won the best behavior contest by 1 point!
